UTIS perspective / Scientific AI

What to check before expanding a scientific AI workload.

A faster demonstration does not answer every deployment question. Confirm the reference result, test environment and remaining dependencies before deciding how to expand a scientific AI application.

Define the workload and reference result

Define the workload, input and reference result before interpreting a benchmark. A scientific task may need to preserve known physical behavior as well as complete a computation.

Record the runtime environment and the comparison method. A result measured on one workload and platform should remain attached to those conditions.

Check what is needed to run it

An available GPU platform does not settle questions about container builds, network access, data movement or deployment permissions. Map those dependencies before treating a benchmark as an operating capability.

Describe what has actually run and what remains blocked. That gives the next team a concrete starting point instead of an assumption that every prerequisite is complete.

Measure cost separately from hardware size

A proposed or validated GPU footprint is one piece of the operating design. A financial comparison also depends on utilization, runtime, pricing and the work performed.

Report resource quantities and verified costs separately. Treat a live workspace, an end-to-end execution and an adopted production service as different milestones.

Document how another team can use it

An intake template, architecture reference and clear workload requirements can help another team understand the path through the platform. Document the assumptions as carefully as the successful run.

The linked cases show separate workload-validation and MLOps contexts. Their evidence should inform the next set of questions, while a new engagement establishes its own acceptance and operating criteria.

Put it into practice.

Make the workload, reference, environment and remaining prerequisites explicit before deciding what comes next.
